How to measure AI visibility without guessing

Updated November 5, 2026Draft

Estimated "AI traffic" numbers are guesses. Here's what can actually be measured, and how we do it.

What can't be measured

No AI assistant reports how often it mentioned your dealership. Any tool that shows a number of "AI impressions" or "AI traffic" without a source is estimating it. Virtual Lot doesn't show estimates; if we didn't log it, it didn't happen.

What can

Four things can be measured directly, and each comes with its evidence:

  • The answer itself. We ask the questions buyers in your area ask, without naming you, and store each answer word for word, with which dealers it names and which pages it cites.
  • Crawler visits. When GPTBot, PerplexityBot or another AI crawler fetches one of your pages, it's logged as it happens.
  • Agent calls. Every search an AI agent runs against your MCP server is recorded.
  • Leads. A lead that arrives from an AI assistant's link carries that source into your CRM.

Reading the results

Answers vary from week to week, so a single answer means little. Over four weeks a question settles into a pattern: assistants name you, they name other dealers, or they only cite marketplaces. That pattern tells you where a page of yours could make a difference and where no dealer page will.

Every claim in your Virtual Lot dashboard links to the stored answer it came from, so you can read exactly what the assistant said.
